Aromatherapy involves the use of highly concentrated essential oils extracted from plants in a variety of ways and used for therapeutic purposes. Aromatherapy is thought to work by sending chemical messages to the limbic system of the brain which controls our emotions. This can happen by inhaling the aromas and by absorption via the skin, most commonly through massage.

Aromatherapy is an excellent tool in midwifery that can enhance the care and experience of the birthing person. It has been proven to reduce anxiety and aid relaxation which improves overall well-being. It works by increasing oxytocin (the love hormone) and reducing cortisol (the stress hormone). It can relieve pain and discomfort in pregnancy and help an array of pregnancy related ailments. Research shows that having regular aromatherapy therapies towards the end of pregnancy can increase the likelihood of going into labour spontaneously, facilitating physiological birth and reducing the need for medical intervention.

Aromatherapy can be very effective during pregnancy and the post-natal period and can help relieve psychological symptoms such as anxiety, stress, depression, tension, postnatal depression, lethargy and fear.
It can help alleviate physical symptoms such as back pain, sciatica, muscle tension, oedema (swelling), nausea and constipation.
Aromatherapy can also be used in post-dates pregnancy to encourage labour onset and avoid medical induction of labour. It can help with breastfeeding issues and aid recovery in the postnatal period too.
After consultation, a bespoke 20ml blend will be chosen by both of us dependent on your specific needs and preferences in your pregnancy, whether that is purely for relaxation or to alleviate a physical discomfort or emotional issue. The blend will be bottled and labelled and you will be given instructions on how you can get the most out of your blend.
This can be done in person and collected at the appointment time made, or alternatively the time allocated can be for me to make the blend after discussing with you online. It can even be sent to you in the post at a small additional cost.
